Mooré, a Gur language of Burkina Faso
Mooré belongs to the Gur, or Voltaic, language family. It is related to Dagara, Gourmantché and other languages of Burkina Faso and Ghana. This origin explains why a Dioula speaker will not automatically understand Mooré, even though the two languages coexist in daily life.
Greetings and politeness in Mooré
Greetings structure Mossi social life. You greet according to the time of day and ask about the family before any other question. Formulas vary by region and family. Learning to greet properly is therefore the first step, before vocabulary for trade or travel.
Transmitting Mooré to the diaspora
For many Burkinabè abroad, Mooré is the language of grandparents, ceremonies and trips home. Passing it on requires joyful routines: songs, recipes, stories and regular video calls. Children who associate the language with happy moments keep it far better than through compulsory lessons.
